Affordable resort with high-altitude skiing
- Ski up to altitudes of 2,600 metres
- Over 75 kilometres of combined ski area across
Bansko has built its reputation for a reason – the skiing, culture, chalets and apres ski does not match its low price point. With one of the longest ski runs in the world, slopes fully equipped with snow cannons and a modern gondola lift system. The #1 Bulgarian resort provides reliable ski conditions throughout the entire season. But Bansko’’s flair is partly due to its beautiful cobbled streets, active co-working community and active night life and live music. Not to mention, it’s the perfect place to experience traditional Bulgarian culture.
Skiing and snowboarding in Bansko
75 km of marked piste ski runs. The highest point is Mount Vihren, at 2600m, while most of the resort is above 1700m and with 90% snow cannon coverage. The resort has a total of 21 ski slopes – six of which are designated easy ‘blue’ runs and two intermediate ‘orange’ ones. Meanwhile, advanced skiers and snowboarders can ride the 11 ‘red’ and 2 ‘black’ ones. These are all equipped with a network of 16 lifts and a gondola from the town to the main ski hub “Banderishka Polyana”. Therefore, Bansko offers a diverse choice of slopes – perfect for beginners, but with ample choice for the experienced ones.

Beginner skiing in Bansko
Many Europeans start out skiing in Bansko. The good thing about this resort is that you can almost explore its entirety on blue (easy) slopes.
- Banderishka Polyana: Considered the hub of the resort, this is the place for absolute beginners. You’ll mostly find green slopes and a baby lift where you can take your first steps. If you’re taking ski lessons, it’s where you’ll be starting off.
- Ski Barge Chalin: Next to the Chaling Valog lift – a bit steeper than what Banderishka has to offer, but a great place to get going.
- Ski Road: The ski road is a blue slope that starts at Banderishka and ends in Bansko town itself. It’s a long, nearly 15km run – however, it’s considered one of the easiest in the resort. It has natural flat stops for you to rest, and easy turns to work on. Usually, skiers take the ski road at the end of their day so they can go back to town.
- Blues: Kolarski, or Slope #1 is also one of the easiest blue lines but it’s also very fun to do. After mastering it, you can try your hand on any other blue slope to take your skiing and snowboarding to the next level.
Intermediate skiing in Bansko
Bansko is a particularly suitable resort for skiers transitioning from beginner to intermediate.
- Shiligarnik Slopes: #5 and #10 are very similar, however, it’s worth mentioning that #5 boasts a 300m of steep slope that may be hard for inexperienced skiers. Try your hand on these when you feel like you’re mastered the blues. They connect the bottom of hte Plato runs with Shiligarnika.
- Plato: #3 and #11 – they both go down either side of the Plato lift. With a great view at the top, you can see the town and the surrounding mountains. These runs are some times closed if the weather is poor.
Advanced skiing in Bansko
These are a fair challenge and should not be underestimated.
- Banderitza 2: This is an considered advanced intermediate so try the top of the Banderitza 2 lift when you’re ready to transition into advanced skiing.
- Tomba: Otherwise known as #9, Tomba is where the world cup races are held. Great for fast skiing, but beware of icy terrain.
- Balkaniada: #4 is another advanced intermediate slope and it’s usually less busy than the others.
- Chalin Valog: #15 can be reached from ski road 1 or 2. Arguably the steepest slope in the entire resort.
Bansko’s snow park
The snow park sits at the Plato lift. It includes a kicker jump ramp, rails, slides, boxes and lines. A great option for winter sports tricks.
Things to Do in Bansko
Before anything, Bansko is a town. It holds rich culture and history, but is also modern in its own right. There is plenty to do outside of skiing – no matter what tickles your fancy. Below is a list of some of our favourite activities.

Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is a fantastic form of winter hiking. It will allow you to explore and enjoy the stunning mountains on foot and away from the crowds. From our chalets, we arrange weekly walks for small or big groups. An easier hike to Pirin’s oldest pine tree (Baykushev’s pine to a more challenging walk in Dobrinishte – there’s an option for any mood or endurance level.
Explore Bansko’s Old Tow
Bansko’s cobbled streets are full of charm – the town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and will take you back in time to a simpler time. Most buildings are homes to locals or traditional taverns, yet there are also modern cafes, shops and restaurants to enjoy. Make sure to visit the Holy Trinity Church too!
Relax in geothermal pools
You’ll find there’s no better way to recover from heavy day of ski, snowboarding or hiking letting your body loose in a hot thermal bath. From our chalets, we can arrange trips to local hot springs known for their healing properties. Banya’s spa/restaurant ‘Izgreva’ is a must-visit if you’re into massages, great food and hot pools. Not included in our Bansko ski deals, but our team can drive you to any location per request.
Co-working
Bansko has built a reputation for being a digital nomad hub, even outside of the winter season. Freelancers and work-from-home professionals travel from all of the world to join the community. With a number of co-working spots, you can keep in touch with your work while on your holiday in a suitable and supportive environment.
Night life
All the fun to be had is not on the ski and snowboard alone. Hundreds of pubs, clubs, wineries and taverns cover Bansko’s grounds and provide an interesting variety of apres options – for any age group. We recommend tasting local beers and wine, not to mention endemic spirits like Rakia and Mastika.

Other
The nearby Rila Monastery dates back to the 10th century – one of Bulgaria’s most important cultural and historical landmarks. There are other historically significant locations in the vicinity.
Escape room, a dog shelter and much more await for those curious enough to explore Bulgaria’s best ski resort. Check out our chalet pages on page 1 to see the number of side activities our Bansko ski deals and packages include!

Everyone can benefit from a lesson or two, and we can help arrange these, from beginner to advanced to backcountry guides. We only work with a couple of the highest regarded ski schools in resort, which we believe deliver three vital requirements: experienced instructors, a range of ability groups and small class sizes.
A variety of lessons are available including mixed group, private group, or one-to-one tuition. For mixed group lessons, students will be grouped with others in resort of similar ability. All lessons take place in the main ski zone at the top gondola station, so a ski pass is required. We recommend booking lessons in advance of your stay to ensure you get the best options. Please note we will simply put you in touch with our recommended partners for lessons and the booking will be made directly between you and the ski school, with all information, meeting points, times and payment arranged directly.
Lessons will be charged and need to be paid in лв (Bulgarian lev) or € (Euro). Children from 7 years can be taught in mixed group lessons for ski or snowboard. Younger children can be taught in private group lessons only.
