30+ Things To Do in Bansko, Bulgaria in Winter
On a holiday in Bansko or just want to know what there is to do besides skiing? Let’s not waste much time. Here are 30+ things to do in Bansko, Bulgaria in winter – including winter activities, local culture and winter adventures.
Skiing & Winter Sports
Skiers and winter sport-lovers, we’ve got your covered. Here are some of the best things to do in Bansko in winter, outside your traditional ski season options.
1. Ski Touring

True backcountry skiing is accessible from Bansko, as a big chunk of Pirin is dedicated to off-piste. You can go on group tours lasting 1-6 days and explore challenging but scenic terrain.
A significant part of ski touring is spent hiking, so a good level of endurance is recommended – therefore, this is probably not ideal for beginner skiers.
You get a transfer, gear rental, an introductory class, lunch, and local tour guides with abundant experience. Best of all, you can customize the tours according to your skill level and how much time you want to spend in the mountains. Ski touring season spans from January to April.
2. Skidoo (Snowmobile Safari)

Snowmobile rides are a RUSH. Also known as “skidoos” they can reach high speeds and are a fantastic way to observe the beautiful views the Pirin Mountains have to offer.
Solo adventurers and bigger groups can join the fun and will be provided with all the professional guidance they need. So beginners are welcome! However, if your group is more advanced, guides may adjust the pace of the safari according to your skill level.
3. Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is a great way of getting out and enjoying the beautiful Pirin National Park without having to carry around skis or snowboards. To get away from the crowds and see the mountains from a different perspective.
From our eco-chalets, we arrange weekly walks that can suit any group. From a casual stroll to Pirin’s oldest pine tree to a more ambitious walk in the neighbouring resort of Dobrinishte. For a really arduous journey, consider Vihren Peak with a stop at Vihren Hut.
4. Dobrinishte Ski Area

Dobrinishte is Bansko’s quieter, more traditional sister resort – a small, historically rich town just a short drive away. Dobrinishte offers a more laid-back, local atmosphere and uncrowded ski slopes.
A scenic chairlift leads toward the glacial Bezbog Lake. In winter, it’s ideal for skiing, snowshoeing, and peaceful hikes through snow-covered forests. Our team can provide transfers, guides, and equipment for a full-day adventure to Dobrinishte. Just let us know!
5. Ski Lessons
Are you a beginner or need to brush up? A variety of ski lessons are available including standard group, private group, or one-to-one coaching. For groups, students will be placed with others of similar skill level. All lessons take place in the main ski zone at the top gondola station, so a ski pass is required.
A single adult can expect to pay 265 BGN for a 4-hour private lesson, or 95 BGN for the same length as part of a group. The price for a 4-hour lesson for children under 13 is 85BGN.
Unwinding & Relaxation
When it comes to things to do in Bansko in winter, chilling is just as important as skiing. Here’s how to unwind before going on your next adventure.
6. Thermal Baths & Natural Hot Springs

Visiting a naturally heated pool is a must. Merely a 10-minute drive from Bansko is Banya – home of 72 mineral springs that produce water with a temperature of 57 C. Its mineral contents are famous for their healing properties – not only for recovering after a week of skiing, but also for chronic diseases and trauma.
We organize weekly trips to ‘’Izgreva Complex’’ – a traditional spa complex with multiple mineral facilities and a spacious restaurant with delicious food and drinks. Just take your swimwear and we’ll drive you to the pools and back.
7. Traditional Chalet Spa (Massage, Sauna & Outdoor Hot Tub)

Did you know? To have a full spa day, you don’t need to step out of your lodgings. Guests of the Snomads award-winning ski chalets in Bansko have full access to:
- In-chalet massages;
- Sauna;
- Steam Room;
- Outdoor Hot Tub.
Just a call away are the licensed physiotherapists who make regular visits to our cozy chalets, whos’ job is to provide a relaxing and therapeutic experience. If you’re still looking for accommodation for your Bansko winter holiday, check out the chalets below.
8. Gym With a Mountain View
There’s something special to having a grand and refreshing view of the mountains when working out. As opposed to the overwhelming concrete streets and buildings in the city, the view from the FitBox Fitness Club in Bansko will fuel you with a newfound energy.
There’s no startup fee, and you can simply get a daily pass if you think a monthly membership is overkill. Still, the membership is very affordable at around €30.
9. Coffee Culture on Pirin Street

In recent years, Bansko has become one of the primary hubs for digital nomads in the Balkans. Combine that with the inherent coffee culture in Bulgaria, and it’s no surprise that the town is full of a variety of coffee shops. Some are co-work focused, and others are just places to chill with a warm cup of barista-made coffee.
Just go exploring! No doubt you’ll find a coffee shop that will suit your vibe.
Winter Activities Beyond Skiing
Ready for a thrill? Here are some activities and winter sports beyond skiing that will fill your holiday with memorable variety.
11. Horse Riding
Explore the region on horseback, following scenic grazing trails that range from short rides to multi-day guided treks through the mountains — available by request. The shortest rides start at 30 minutes. The “Ongle” base houses some stunning horses and provides access to other activities such as archery and tree-top climbing.
12. ATV Tours (Quadbike Riding)

ATV tours are a wicked way to explore the landscapes around Bansko and Dobrinishte. Guided routes take you through forests, hills, and off-road trails, with scenic views along the way. No previous experience is needed — instructions and helmets are provided, and most people pick it up quickly.
Tours start in Dobrinishte and run year-round, weather permitting. You can choose between beginner-friendly or more powerful ATVs, and rides can be booked solo or shared. It’s a good option for those looking to see more of the region beyond the ski slopes.
13. Climbing Attraction Park

The amusement park features two tree-top rope courses, two zip lines, and an inflatable castle for younger kids. The smaller rope course is designed for children aged 5 to 12 and includes a 35-meter zip line. The larger course offers a more challenging adventure, paired with a 55-meter zip line — perfect for older kids and adults.
There is also a climbing wall with 4 levels of difficulty for those interested in rock climbing and bouldering, making this park ideal for both adults and children.
14. Combo Adventure (ATV + Rope Park + Horse Riding)

Combine the last three activities on this list into one combo-adventure for a full day of fun! You can only book this with the button below so make sure to free up a day and enjoy the clean fresh air while experiencing an array of sports in the mountains.
15. Ice Skating

Bansko’s outdoor ice rink is a festive winter experience in the heart of town, surrounded by mountain range views and twinkling lights. Perfect for families, couples, and friends, the rink provides skate rentals, warm snacks, and a cozy alpine atmosphere.
Visitors can enjoy daytime or evening sessions, join beginner-friendly lessons, or take part in seasonal events like themed nights and games. It’s one of the main things to do in Bansko in winter for kids. Be sure to bring cash, as card payments are not accepted.

17. Mountain Biking
The past decade has seen a lot of new bike trails being set in the Pirin Mountain. Mountain biking is considered by some an extreme sport, popular in summer. However, there are winter options in Pirin, and not to mention, the nearby Rila Mountain too.
Check out this TravellingBuzz blog for mountain biking inspiration! If you need help finding and renting a mountain bike in Bansko, just hit us up.
18. Whitewater Rafting on the Struma (March/April)

While many consider rafting a summer-exclusive activity, that’s not entirely true. March and April are also an amazing time to enjoy a 3-hour long rafting adventure down Struma River, lead by certified instructors. Full equipment provided, as well as added a local meal, transport and insurance.
Plus, you ride for free if it’s your birthday! Beautiful scenery and an adrenaline pump in early spring is just what the doctor ordered.
Cultural Trips & Sightseeing
Fun fact: Bulgaria is one of the oldest countries in Europe, and the oldest one that has retained its original name. With such a long history, it’s an incredible center of Balkan and Slavic culture worth exploring. Here are some things to do and see in Bansko and around it in winter.
19. Walk Around Bansko’s Old Town

The Old Town – a charming maze of cobbled streets, stone houses, and traditional Bulgarian architecture. A UNESCO-listed cultural site, Bansko’s Old Town holds buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.
Many homes remain lived-in, while others have been transformed into cozy Mehanas (which we’ll talk about next). You’ll also find small museums, artisan shops, and the Holy Trinity Church, a must-see landmark with its 30-meter bell tower rising above the rooftops.
There is a free walking tour on Saturdays and Sundays, starting at 3 pm in winter from the Holy Trinity Church. It lasts 1.5-2 hours.
20. Mehana (Traditional Bulgarian Tavern)

Mehanas are taverns with traditional interiors and oftentimes a fireplace. They are cozy, warm, serving local Bulgarian food and it’s not uncommon for Bansko’s mehanas to host live music. Locally brewed wine and rakia are bound to light up the spirits, leading to a group “Horo” – a communal traditional Bulgarian dance that everyone is welcome to join.
If you’re visiting Bansko, a Mehana is a MUST. Here’s a list of our favorite mehanas and restaurants.
Make sure to tell them Snomads send you for a free drink on the house!
21. Rila Monastery

History – there’s no shortage of it in Bulgaria. Rila Monastery dates back to the 10th century and has earned a spot in UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. It houses over 60 monks and is a popular pilgrimage destination of Orthodox Christians across the world.
The monastery has a long history of support from rulers, and yet raids from Ottomans. Despite all this, it has stood the test of time. If you’re staying in Bansko, we offer day trips to Rila Monastery, and we’ll be happy to help you get there.
22. Dobarsko Church

Dobarsko Church may be small, but it’s one of Bulgaria’s most mysterious landmarks. Built in 1614, its walls are covered in vivid 400-year-old frescoes — including unusual depictions of Jesus in what appears to be a spaceship, which have sparked global curiosity and UFO theories.
The church also features over 460 figures, including rare full-length saints and more female saints than any other church in Bulgaria. Outside, a spring with healing water that never freezes adds to the site’s wonder.
If you rented a car, you can reach Dobarsko in 20 minutes.
23. Traditional Baba Evening Near Dobarsko

Visit the house of Grandma Deshka – witness the crafts, folklore and traditional cuisine of Bulgaria in an immersive experience grounded in reality. Just near Dobarsko village, it’s worth combining this joyful visit with a trip to Dobarsko Church.
You’ll learn and practice some crafts and finish your stay with a buffet lunch consisting of home-cooked dishes, prepared on site.
24. Kukeri Festival on New Year’s Day

If you plan on celebrating New Year’s in Bansko, you’re in for a treat.
According to tradition, costumed performers known as “Kukeri” parade through the town, warding off evil spirits to ensure a prosperous year head. The Kukeri themselves are elaborately dressed in frightening yet charming masks, heavy fur and loud bells, performing traditional dances and rituals. It’s truly a sight to behold.
25. Narrow Gauge Railway Day Trip

The Septemvri-Dobrinishte supports Bulgaria’s last remaining Narrow Gauge Railway. For a truly local experience, you can ride the train which is considered in the Top 10 most scenic train routes in Europe – with rivers, mountains and forests to observe while you listen to the monotonic sound of the steam locomotive. There are regular stops along the way.
26. Day Trip to Borovets
Borovets is another popular ski resort in Bulgaria. It’s a smaller and easier-to-navigate resort with a more developed snowpark for snowboarders, compared to Bansko’s.
While many prefer to stay in Bansko because it’s cheaper, bigger, and has more reliable ski conditions, a day trip to Borovets is entirely possible as it’s a 2 hour drive away. One reason you might do this is for the night skiing, which is currently unavailable in Bansko.
Our team can drive you there directly from our ski chalets

27. Beer Tasting at Pivoteka

Pivoteka is a notorious shop with a massive variety of craft beers.
28. Melnik Wine Tasting Day
Tucked beneath the Pirin Mountains, Melnik is a living museum — a tiny town of historical architecture, churches, and cultural landmarks set among striking sandstone formations.
Known for its rich, earthy wines dating back to the 14th century, Melnik is a perfect place to taste local vintages, explore traditional Leshten-style buildings, snap stunning photos, pick up unique souvenirs or wine, and enjoy an authentic Bulgarian dinner (optional, paid separately).
29. Bansko & Razlog Markets
One of our favourite local experiences — and where we often source produce for our ski chalets.
Every Sunday in Bansko (and Monday in nearby Razlog), the market comes alive with colourful stalls selling everything from handmade rugs to fresh produce and local rakia and wine. It’s a great way to experience Bulgarian culture, and we’re always happy to take you along — just ask when you arrive.
30. Nightlife in Bansko
Here are some of our top après ski bars and nightclubs, frequented by both tourists and locals:
- Happy End – Situated opposite the gondola, so it’s difficult to miss. Styled after a traditional Austrian après bar. It’s among the more expensive places, but worth checking out; the interior and atmosphere are very impressive.
- The Karaoke Bar – Close to Pirin 75 Bar. An underground venue where you can even participate in late-night beer pong tournaments.
- Pirin75 Bar – A pub with a casual atmosphere and friendly staff. Know for their electro-swing nights.
- Jacks House – Bansko’s hottest nightclub attracts mostly tourists. Lively music from the resident DJ, as well as an impressive selection of drinks. Overall, you can’t go wrong with Jacks House.
- Flash Nightclub – Inspired by the sci-fi film TRON: Legacy. State-of-the-art sound and lighting schemes make for a very dynamic aesthetic and feel in which to lose yourself.
- Euphoria – Nice in the day for food and drinks outside, but at night they usually put on a live band and the place becomes extremely vibrant and enjoyable.
- Amigo Pub – have lunch in your ski gear or go out for dinner. The establishment is modeled as a massive alpine house on 2 floors. Live performances start after 9 pm and the food is fantastic.
During your nights out, we highly recommend trying:
- Pirinsko Beer – Named after the Pirin Mountains, it’s a local favourite said to be brewed with fresh mountain water. Tastes even better after a day on the slopes.
- Mavrud Wine – A deep red Bulgarian wine with soft, fruity notes. Made from one of the country’s oldest and most prized grape varieties.
- Rakia – A strong fruit brandy beloved across the Balkans. Drinking it is a true local tradition.
- Mastika – Bulgaria’s answer to ouzo, with a bold aniseed flavour and a 47% kick. Handle with care!
Bar-hop and follow the crowds! You’re bound to find a place you like, even if you miss your last shuttle to your lodgings. Taxis are cheap and you can often easily walk home to your chalet!
31. Escape Room in Bansko

Escape rooms add nice variety to a winter holiday – it’s social, challenging and very fun. While it’s not something you’ll find in most ski resorts, Bansko has 2 escape rooms ready to be explored. Great for group friends, families and even team buildings.
There’s a 20% discount during week days, so make sure to snag it if you can! They work between 15:00 – 22:00, but may open at earlier hours per request.
